Ways to Help

Here is a calendar view of ways in which members of your congregation can minister to those in need.  These are some ideas:

January: Participate in Souper Bowl Sunday. Collect $1 and /or cans of soup from each member of your congregation for your local pantry on Super Bowl Sunday.

February: Plan to attend “Living on the Edge” Poverty Simulation Workshop at some point this year. Call for dates.

March: “Undie Sunday” New unused underwear is often not available for those who need them. Hold a drive to collect under garments for adults and children and donate them to your local pantry.

April: Organize an Easter Food Drive. Food drive ideas and a daily collection calendar are available from Access.

May: GRACE Hunger Walk: On the first Saturday of every May, thousands of walkers are needed to raise funds for pantry assistance, emergency meals and development programs for both the Grand Rapids and international communities.

June: Build an “Access Sundae” (flyers available) to help us meet needs during the summer when kids are home from school all day and numbers are highest at our pantries.

July/August: Organize a “Back-to-School” collection to help low-income families get ready to start the new school year.

September: “Buckets of Love”: Hold a drive to collect buckets of cleaning products to offer to low-income families visiting the pantries.

October: County Wide Food Drive: On the second Saturday in October, volunteers are needed for a variety of positions including door-to-door canvassing, food box assembly, and participating in organizing the event by joining a team in your area.

November/December: Volunteers are needed to register families at each food pantry October through November. Volunteers are also needed to provide holiday baskets for families who have applied.
