2009 was an unprecedented year. Michigan, along with much of the rest of the nation, experienced the greatest economic downturn since the depression. Kent County’s unemployment rate is over 15% and the Department of Human Services reported a 20% increase (43,633) in food assistance cases.  Food pantry services did not increase as much as expected, though we have experienced increases greater than 10% each of the last several years.
